Question: What is the current opinion about the effectiveness of intranasal capsaicin in patients with idiopathic rhinitis?
Findings: A critical appraisal of up-to-date literature concludes that some beneficial effect of intranasal capsaicin on idiopathic rhinitis symptoms might be expected. However, the level of evidence is low to moderate and no formal scientifically valid recommendation can be made. Our retrospective post-intervention study shows a high percentage of non-responders (72.0%) after protocolled treatment.
Meaning: Because treatment with topical capsaicin is labor-intensive, reported to be very unpleasant and results in our center are disappointing, continuation of our treatment protocol in its current form is under debate. Recommendations to improve outcome are made.
